Drivers working on the construction of a highway connecting Georgia’s western and eastern parts have been on strike since Wednesday, demanding a rise in their daily pay and reduction of working hours by one hour.
“We have ₾33 for 9-hour work and are demanding ₾50. There are 14 vehicles in total” they told the media.
The company China State Construction Engineering Corporation Limited, which carries out construction works, has responded to the strike with an official statement.
“We encourage people employed in our company to submit any requests or complaints to the company’s management, instead of making unsubstantiated and discrediting statements to the media.
“The company will definitely consider the demands put forward by the employees and take them into account as much as possible in order to reach an agreement acceptable to both parties,” the company claimed.
The same statement also reads that the remuneration and working hours of the employees “meet the requirements stipulated by the Labor Code of Georgia”.
