Droa leader faints while on hunger strike in parliament

Leader of the Droa opposition party, Elene Khoshtaria, has fainted earlier today in parliament, while on the sixth day of hunger strike in solidarity with arrested former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, who has been on hunger strike for 39 days. 

An emergency brigade has been called in parliament for Khoshtaria, with a doctor saying that  fainting was supposedly caused by low blood pressure.

The ruling Georgian Dream party MP, Sozar Subari, advised Khoshtaria to either stop her hunger strike, or at least receive medical care to maintain strength. 

Khoshtaria is demanding Saakashvili’s transfer to a civil clinic. 

She says that she is not Saakashvili’s supporter.

However, noting that  the former president’s life is at risk and he must receive proper medical aid in a private clinic. 

Saakashvili was arrested in Tbilisi on October 1, after eight years in political exile. He says he has returned to remove the Georgian Dream from power. 

Georgian Dream officials say that Saakashvili plans to cause unrest if he is transferred to a private clinic and offered to receive treatment in a prison hospital, which Saakashvili declined. 

The former president was convicted in Georgia in absentia back in 2018 for abuse of power and was sentenced to six years in prison.
