Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs on Wednesday said a temporary detention facility had been fully equipped with fingerprint scanning technology, following the handover of 12 additional scanners by the ministry’s Forensic and Criminalistics Department.
The Ministry said the scanners allow for the immediate fingerprinting of individuals brought into the facility, with fingerprint data uploaded directly to a centralised forensic database managed by the department.
The ministry also said that staff at the detention facility have undergone specialised training conducted by qualified forensic experts to ensure the system is used correctly.
Fingerprint data is processed using the AFIS DACTO 2000 automated identification system, which the ministry said is designed to support faster identification and improve the efficiency of criminal investigations.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs said the upgrade was part of a broader effort to modernise police infrastructure, improve operational effectiveness and enhance working conditions for police officers. Further infrastructure and equipment upgrades are planned, according to the ministry.
