The political movement Neutral Georgia has called on Georgia's ruling party to reconsider the country's declared goal of joining the European Union, arguing that proposed reforms to the bloc's enlargement process could leave future members with limited voting rights.
In a statement on Wednesday, the group cited recent remarks by Commissioner Marta Kos regarding potential changes to the EU's decision-making framework for new member states, claiming such proposals would create unequal rights and obligations within the bloc.
Neutral Georgia said any arrangement that grants future members fewer voting powers than existing member states would raise concerns about sovereignty and democratic representation.
The group also criticised the EU's current political direction, arguing that candidate countries could face increasing pressure to align with decisions made in Brussels without having an equal role in shaping them.
Neutral Georgia urged the ruling Georgian Dream party to abandon what it described as an unrealistic path toward EU membership and proposed a public debate on Georgia's future relationship with the bloc.
