ECHR announces ruling on Temirlan Machalikashvili case

The European Court of Human Rights on Thursday announced its judgment in the high-profile case of murder of Temirlan Machalikashvili in an anti-terrorist raid in Georgia’s Muslim-populated Pankisi Gorge in 2017. 

The court said there had been a violation of the procedural aspect of the second article of the European Convention on Human Rights (right to life).

Also, the Chamber found by six votes to one that there had been no violation of the essential aspect of Article 2 of the Convention (right to life).

The court ruled that the state of Georgia should pay the plaintiffs 10,000 euros for non-material damages and 15,000 euros to cover court costs.

The family claimed the 19-year-old was “mistakenly” killed in a “poorly-planned” special operation.
