Opposition leader: “GD is taking damaging steps to have Georgia’s CoE membership suspended”

Leader of the For Justice party, Eka Beselia, has accused the ruling Georgian Dream party of deliberately pushing the country toward international isolation by undermining democratic values and constitutional rights.

“There is a direct assault on democracy and constitutional freedoms—an attack on everything valuable that remains from the reforms we once implemented. Georgian Dream is taking openly harmful steps, aiming for the Council of Europe to suspend Georgia’s membership. I remember how this happened with Russia, and now GD is following the same path. This could be the final blow to our country, and we must not allow it. This is the very foundation of our constitutional order,” Beselia stated.

She also warned of increasing pressure on civil society and the media.

“They want to silence the media and have blocked every possible path for the civil sector to function. It feels like they want to suffocate us,” she said.

Beselia’s remarks reflect growing concerns among opposition figures and civil society groups in Georgia, who see recent government actions as a threat to the country’s democratic progress and its Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
