A senior official from the People’s Power party on Tuesday claimed disagreements between the United States and the European Union over Greenland reflected a broader global struggle over spheres of influence.

Speaking to journalists, the party’s secretary for international relations, Eka Sepashvili, said competition for resources and control over key transport and connectivity routes was playing a decisive role in what she described as a global power struggle.

She said she hoped major global actors would avoid military escalation, limiting their rivalry to trade disputes or resolving differences through diplomatic means. According to Sepashvili, tensions surrounding Greenland underlined the redistribution of influence taking place at a global level.

In separate remarks, Sepashvili accused the opposition of politicising the recent presidential pardon process, saying the public controversy surrounding it was driven by political manoeuvring.

Commenting on criticism of the pardon decision, she questioned why individuals convicted of crimes against the state - and who, she said, did not recognise the legitimacy of state institutions - would expect a pardon from the president.

Sepashvili said it was unclear why people who, in her words, had committed “serious offences” against the state (during anti-government protests) and had shown no remorse would anticipate clemency, while simultaneously rejecting the authority of the president and other state institutions.

She argued that the criticism amounted to an attempt to discredit a humanitarian act for political purposes and was not based on legal or objective arguments. Sepashvili also described as contradictory the opposition’s position of denying the legitimacy of the state while demanding the use of presidential powers in the form of pardons.
