Georgian opposition leader Elene Khoshtaria has said recent political developments in Moldova and Hungary reflect a growing European unity trend that, in her view, should be further strengthened in Georgia.

In a letter released from detention, Khoshtaria said authoritarian regimes are increasingly losing influence, while Western institutions are becoming more active.

“Long live European Hungary,” she wrote, arguing that modern authoritarian systems rely on mutual support between regimes and perceived inaction from the West.

According to her, recent developments in Moldova and Hungary demonstrate a broader trend of European integration and democratic resilience.

“The idea of a united Europe has already prevailed in Moldova and now in Hungary. To turn it into a lasting trend, it must be strengthened in Georgia as well,” she wrote.

Khoshtaria added that EU and NATO membership can serve as a safeguard against authoritarianism, arguing that it sets clear limits for democratic backsliding.
