Georgian opposition leader Elene Khoshtaria has accused the ruling Georgian Dream of “institutionally destroying” the country’s integration process with NATO.
In a letter released from detention on Monday, Khoshtaria said years of progress towards NATO membership - including Georgia’s recognition as a potential candidate - had been undermined by the current government. She argued that even maintaining previous momentum would have been sufficient to preserve those gains.
She also pointed to earlier cooperation frameworks such as Partnership for Peace, stating that Georgia has effectively regressed to a level of engagement comparable to the 1990s.
Despite the criticism, Khoshtaria said the losses could be reversed. She expressed confidence that a change of government and renewed efforts towards European integration would enable Georgia to regain its position and return to the path of NATO membership, particularly in light of evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Black Sea and South Caucasus regions.
She called for immediate re-engagement with NATO to advance what she described as an alternative strategic vision.
