EPP calls for sanctions on Georgian Gov’t over democratic backsliding

MEPs from the European People’s Party (EPP) Group, currently on a fact-finding mission in Georgia, have called for sanctions against Georgian officials and political leaders responsible for what they describe as the country’s democratic backsliding.

“I am really proud of the Georgian people. They know that the future of their country is in their hands and that its European path is at stake,” said Rasa Juknevičienė, MEP and the European Parliament’s Spokesperson on Georgia. She reaffirmed the delegation’s support for President Salome Zourabichvili and pro-European Georgians striving for democracy.

Juknevičienė condemned the actions of the ruling Georgian Dream party, highlighting recent reports of violence against peaceful protesters and arrests of opposition members. “What is happening on the streets of Georgia is utterly unacceptable. This authoritarian behavior has no place in a nation aspiring to join Europe,” she stated.

She urged EU foreign ministers, set to meet on Monday, to impose sanctions on officials and leaders, including Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, for alleged election violations, misuse of state institutions, and abuses of power.

The delegation, led by Juknevičienė, is holding meetings with President Zourabichvili, opposition figures, civil society representatives, and independent media to demonstrate the European Parliament’s support for Georgia’s democratic aspirations and its pro-European future.
