The Embassy of Spain in Georgia has extended condolences to the Georgian public following the death of Ilia II.

In an official statement, the embassy expressed “sincere condolences to the Georgian Orthodox Church and the people of Georgia” over the passing of the Patriarch, describing him as “a cornerstone of Georgia’s spiritual identity” and wishing that he “rest in peace.”

Ilia II, who served for decades as head of the Georgian Orthodox Church, died on 17 March at the age of 93. A period of national mourning has been declared across the country.

He is due to be laid to rest on 22 March at Sioni Cathedral in Tbilisi.
