On February 24, the Republic of Estonia celebrates its national holiday – Independence Day.

Estonia declared statehood on February 24, 1918 and adopted the Declaration of Independence.

This day has been officially celebrated since August 20, 1991 after the Soviet occupation.

Estonia gained full independence in 1991, which was recognized by the United Nations. At the end of 2002, two important events in the recent history of Estonia took place – the country received an official invitation to join NATO and the European Union, and in April 2004 became a full member of these organizations.
