Estonian Ambassador to Georgia Riina Kaljurand said on Tuesday in Parliament that it would be ideal if Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova receive at least the potential EU candidate status in the coming weeks, following the bid of the countries for EU membership.
After the meeting with the MPs of Strategy Agmashenebeli in the Georgian state legislature, the ambassador said that “a very difficult process is underway in Brussels over the applications of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova, and it is too early to say how the process may end.”
“There are some problems in Georgia, but there are also problems in Moldova and Ukraine. I would say that the EU will take these circumstances into account, but it will also consider the global geopolitical situation and regional security,” said the ambassador.
The trio applied for EU membership following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year.
The countries are now expecting that the EU may grant them the candidate status, a step prior to membership.
Current candidate countries include Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey, while Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo are potential candidates.
