EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell says that the recent decision of the European Council to grant European perspective to Georgia was “truly historic.” However, he noted that the decision on Georgia was “less favorable”” than that one over Ukraine and Moldova, and Tbilisi needed  to work properly to receive the status.

“A few days ago, Georgia received the European perspective, which means that all EU member states agree Georgia is eligible to one day become a EU member state. This is a truly historic moment. At the same time, Georgia got a less favorable decision than both Ukraine and Moldova, underlining the fact that now is the time for concerted action to make sure that the opportunities that are open won’t be lost,” Hartzell said on Wednesday.

Georgia needs to address the priorities set by the European Commission in a six-month time to receive the candidate status.
