EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell says that current events over Ukraine also matter for Georgia and Europe, noting that expressing solidarity and support for Ukraine is important but readiness for practical support values more.

“You know that now is a very important moment for Ukraine, for Georgia and for the whole region – a crucial moment for Europe, for the EU.  In these circumstances it is very important not only to reiterate the principled position and support, but also to express readiness for action. You have seen that the EU has sent a very important message that further aggression against Ukraine will have very serious consequences,” Hartzell stated.

He welcomed that the Georgian government and individuals have expressed their solidarity with Ukraine.

“it is important to show solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. I have seen it here in Georgia as well, the expression of solidarity by both the government and individuals,” he said.

Hartzell also welcomed the Georgian parliament’s plans to adopt a resolution in support of Ukraine, refraining from going into further details.

Both the ruling party and the opposition have proposed draft resolutions in support of Ukraine.

The parliamentary opposition dislikes the draft resolution by the ruling party as it ‘lacks sections about Russia’s responsibility in the tension.’
