Pawel Herczynski, the European Union Ambassador to Georgia on Friday said it was important for the rights of currently imprisoned former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, to be protected.

“The European Union is closely monitoring the condition of former president Saakashvili. We are in contact with his family, and we are also raising the issue of his rights with the Georgian authorities. It is very important that Saakashvili’s rights are protected.Of course, it is up to the court of Georgia to make a decision over his future,” the ambassador said.

Saakashvili’s lawyers have addressed the court earlier this week to release the former president on “medical grounds”, citing the recent health report by the domestic Empathy centre, which had pointed to 20 health issues that could lead to coma and death of the former top official.
