European Union Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczynski, on Friday affirmed the bloc’s commitment to closely monitoring not only the election day but the entire electoral campaign in the country this year. Expressing hope for equal conditions, the diplomat stressed the importance of providing all political parties with ample space to engage and present their programmes.

Highlighting the significance of free and fair elections, Herczynski referenced them as one of the nine benchmarks outlined by the European Commission and supported by EU member states last month when granting Georgia the EU membership candidate status. He acknowledged the Government of Georgia’s commitment to seek long-term observation from OSCE/ODIHR, a move supported by all EU member states.

The diplomat noted that while traditionally, OSCE member states handle long-term observations, there were ongoing discussions among EU member states on the bloc’s involvement in the process.
