We are ready to help the Georgian government to find a way out of the current situation, which, unfortunately, contributes to polarization, Pawel Herczynski, the European Union Ambassador said in comments on the currently imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili.

“We want to make sure that Saakashvili’s rights are fully protected”, said the diplomat, adding “I cannot comment on how his family is trying to react to his imprisonment. What I can say is that, as the EU, we want to make sure his rights are fully protected”.

The Georgian Government has accused Saakashvili and his family of paying money to a US-based law firm to lobby for his release, with the activities involving efforts to impose sanctions on the Georgian Government for alleged ill-treatment of Saakashvili while in custody.

The information has been made available after the disclosure of the Akerman firm with the US Department of Justice earlier this month, as part of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

The Georgian Dream authorities also say the May ruling by the European Court of Human Rights – that rejected Saakashvili’s transfer abroad on health grounds – had “confirmed” his allegations on alleged torture and ill-treatement were “fake” and aimed at “escaping justice”.
