EU Commision for Georgia’s candidacy on understanding that Gov’t takes important reform steps – Ursula von der Leyen

The European Commission recommends granting candidate status to Georgia on the understanding that the Government takes important reform steps, Ursula von der Leyen, the Commission President said on Wednesday, before announcing the launch of accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova. The official said she meant the steps that “mirror the genuine aspirations of the overwhelming majority of its citizens to join the EU”. 

 

Speaking about Ukraine she said the country was “deeply reforming their country and preparing for accession, even as they are fighting an existential war”, while over Moldova she noted  its Government had undertaken “significant reforms, despite constant destabilisation efforts against its democracy”.
