Oliver Varhelyi, the European Union commissioner for neighbourhood and enlargement, on Friday tweeted that “we make Georgia ready for becoming a member of the EU”, following his recent visit to Georgia.

“We see that the vast majority of Georgia is for EU membership. This is a very strong mandate, not only for the government, but the entire political elite of the country, and everybody who is active in working on this”, the commissioner said.

Varhelyi visited Georgia on Wednesday, which was his first trip to Georgia after the country gained European perspective and conditions for the membership candidate status in the bloc in June.

While in Georgia, he met prime minister Irakli Garibashvili and domestic politicians, including the members of the opposition, and called for joint work on the 12-point conditions set by the European Commission for the country’s membership candidacy.
