EU Council President announces expansion by 2030

Expansion is no longer a dream. It’s time to move on. It will be difficult, but we must set a clear goal. I believe that we should be ready for expansion by 2030, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said in his speech at the Strategic Forum in Slovenia on Monday. 

 

“Ukraine and Moldova were granted candidate status in June last year. The same status awaits Georgia when it completes the necessary steps. So enlargement is not a dream, now is the time to move forward. There is much more to be done. It will be difficult and sometimes painful for future member states and For the European Union as well.

 

“I believe that we should be ready on both sides for the 2030 expansion. This means that the EU’s long-term budget must include our common goals, it is an ambitious but necessary plan, it shows that we are serious”, says Michel.
