EU expansion is a clear response to aggression and destabilization, and it is even clearer that European future has no alternative for Georgia, President Salome Zourabichvili on Friday said in response to claims by German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, this week that the bloc’s planned enlargement was a geopolitical result of Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

“EU expansion is a geopolitical consequence of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. We can no longer allow gray areas in Europe. Enlargement is also a geopolitical opportunity for the European Union,” said the German official during a gathering hosted by her office over the bloc enlargement.

Georgia officially applied for EU membership in March 2022, shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and was granted a European perspective and conditions to obtain the bloc’s candidacy later.

The European Council is scheduled to decide on Georgia’s candidate status in December.
