The idea of joining the European Union is intertwined with the need for reforms, freedom, security and stability, we saw this on the example of the new applicants, said Oliver Varhelyi, the EU commissioner for neighbourhood and enlargement, said at the end of the session held in the European Parliament on Tuesday, where the new EU enlargement strategy was discussed.

“We need political will from both the EU and the candidate countries. Enlargement is a geopolitical priority for us and our allies. The idea of joining the EU is intertwined with the need for reforms, freedom, security and stability. We have seen this on the example of new applicants, it is our responsibility to live up to these expectations. We should reinforce the policy of enlargement with strict but fair conditions, based on the principle of achievements,” he said.

The official claimed that the EU enlargement “is a strategic investment” to ensure stability and security on the European continent.
