Rikard Jozwiak, head of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's European bureau, says the issue of suspending Georgia’s visa-free travel to the Schengen Area may be discussed in various formats, including at the upcoming UN General Assembly.
Speaking to Formula TV, Jozwiak noted that the European Council is expected to return to the visa liberalization issue in October. He emphasized the importance of the letter sent by the European Commission to the Georgian government, which outlines specific demands that must be addressed by a clear deadline.
"The European Commission has sent a letter to Georgia stating that they expect answers to the concerns tied to the visa suspension mechanism. They need this by the end of August,” Jozwiak said.
He added that discussions on the matter will continue in different forums. “I think it will also come up in New York during the UN General Assembly and again at the European Council in October. Member states will also be watching the local elections in Georgia closely,” he said.
Jozwiak stressed that the deadline for action is clearly defined and that the EU expects concrete steps from the Georgian government on the issues outlined in the letter.
