The European Union’s Representation in Georgia on Wednesday voiced support for young people defending their rights and European values in the country, as highlighted in a statement released on World Children’s Day.

“In Georgia, young people have been at the forefront of safeguarding their rights, freedoms and their country’s EU future. We stand firmly by them, and stress the need to respect their fundamental right to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly”, the statement reads.

The EU Representation also reiterated its commitment to protecting children and youth from violence, adding, “we are listening to them and taking their voice seriously. The EU is dedicated to supporting Georgia in creating a safe environment for every child and young person”.

The statement comes amid ongoing protests by opposition supporters, including students, contesting the results of the October 26 parliamentary elections. The Central Election Commission declared the ruling Georgian Dream party victorious for a fourth term, a result President Salome Zourabichvili has called “falsified.”
