Josep Borrell, the European Union High Representative, who is on his first official visit to Georgia, on Friday said he had discussed Georgia’s European integration path, including importance to increase foreign policy alignment and wider regional matters with Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili in Tbilisi.

In his social media post, the official stressed he had also discussed Georgia’s implementation of the 12-point conditions outlined the bloc last year for granting Georgia its membership candidate status, with the European Council scheduled to decide on the status later this year.

“We are fully committed to supporting Georgia’s EU aspirations”, he tweeted.

Borrell is now meeting with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, with a joint press briefing scheduled later today.

While in Georgia today, the EU official will also meet with the country’s President, the members of the opposition and civil society groups.
