Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative and Vice-President of the European Commission, has been scheduled to make his first official visit to Georgia on Thursday, ahead of the bloc’s forthcoming decision later this year whether to grant Georgia its membership candidate status.
While in Georgia until Saturday, the official will discuss progress on Georgia’s European integration path, and exchange views on wider foreign policy and regional matters, the EU press office said on Monday.
Borrell will meet with President Salome Zourabichvili, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili, members of the opposition and civil society, before joining the activities of the European Union Monitoring Mission at the occupation line in central Georgia, separating the country’s currently Russian-controlled Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region from the rest of Georgia.
