The European Commission will on June 22 present an oral report on the implementation of recommendations by Georgia to obtain the European Union’s membership candidate status by the end of this year, as well as how Ukraine and Moldova are fulfilling the conditions they received last June along with the bloc’s full candidacy.
The Commission’s oral reports on the Associated Trio will be discussed at the meeting of the General Affairs Council of the EU scheduled in Stockholm on June 21-22, with a press briefing following the session.
The European Commission on June 17, 2022 recommended the European Council to grant Ukraine and Moldova the bloc’s candidate status with conditions, and only a European perspective to Georgia with conditions to later obtain the status, with Tbilisi claiming it was a “historic”, but an “unfair and a politically motivated” move.
In their comments Georgian officials highlited Tbilisi was “far ahead” of both states with its level of democracy, claiming the bloc reportedly “punished ” Georgia for its refusal to get involved in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, with the west strongly denying such attempts.
Georgia applied for EU membership on March 3, 2022, after Ukraine and Moldova, instead of scheduled 2024, shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February.
