The European Union is considering imposing sanctions on Moldovan oligarchs who are trying to overthrow the pro-Western government in Chisinau, Euobserver said on Friday.
The media noted a 14-page legal framework for restrictive measures was released by the European Commission in Brussels on April 17.
It noted the draft sanctions include the freezing of assets and a ban on entry into EU territory.
Restrictions are planned to be imposed on individuals and bodies that “threaten democracy, rule of law, stability and security in Moldova”.
The media suggested the formation of sanctions was primarily directed against two businessmen – Ilan Shor, an Israel-born Moldovan oligarch, and Vladimir Plahatniuk – who are accused of having connections with Russia and shadowy influence on Moldovan politics.
According to the publication, the framework draft of the sanctions will probably be adopted at the meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg at the end of next week.
