The ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party head Irakli Kobakhidze suggested on Wednesday that the recent recommendation of the European Commission to the European Council to grant a candidate status and European perspective to Ukraine and Moldova and only European perspective to Georgia, was “political and not based on deeds and achievements.”
Kobakhidze stated that the decision had its “political grounds.”
“It is a fact that in all parameters, such as democracy, the rule of law, the fight against corruption and economic parameters, we are ahead of both countries. This is an objective reality, the rest is a political decision.
“Therefore, the government has done everything to make the application successful, but we understand that the decision of the Commission was political,” Kobakhidze said.
The European Council will announce its decision on the candidate status on June 24.
However, it is expected that the Council will consider the Commission’s recommendations and will decide on Georgia’s candidate status if Georgia addresses several issues.
