European leaders have reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington.
Among those assuring Ukraine of Europe’s commitment were European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa. The EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, emphasized the need for strong leadership in the face of Russian aggression, stating, “Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader.”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed Berlin’s backing, declaring, “Ukraine can rely on Germany – and on Europe.” French President Emmanuel Macron was equally firm, stating, “Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the aggressed people.” Meanwhile, a spokesperson for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed, “He retains his unwavering support for Ukraine.”
The statements came as Zelenskyy concluded his White House visit on February 28. While he sought to secure further US military support, he also questioned the feasibility of negotiations with Russia, citing Moscow’s repeated violations of past ceasefires. However, skepticism from President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance underscored the growing divide in US policy on Ukraine. Vance went so far as to criticize Zelenskyy for what he described as a lack of gratitude for previous US assistance, while Trump raised his voice, claiming Zelenskyy was ”gambling with World War III.”
