Former Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia responded to the recent letter by the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party Bidzina Ivanishvili and said Wednesday that the letter pointed at “trading with the country’s fate for his own interests.”
“It is all sad. We even reached the point of trading with the country’s future for our own interests, and that is how myths are shattered,” Gakharia said.
Ivanishvili issued the letter earlier today in which he confirmed a meeting took place between him and the US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan.
He suggested the meeting was held on March 21 at the Ambassador’s request and “lasted about three hours”.
Ivanishvili also talked about the political situation in the region and noted that “today, when the threat of war has been neutralised thanks to the current authorities”, the ruling party had the opportunity to shift its attention to the “most important priority and ensure that Georgia’s relations with the USA and the European Union are not endangered.”
The opposition said that the letter was the continuation of the “anti-Western rhetoric” as Ivanishvili refused to dismiss the allegations towards the West that the latter was trying to drag Georgia into Russia’s war in Ukraine.
