Georgia’s former PM Giorgi Gakharia has presented mayoral candidates of his For Georgia political party in the country’s coastal Adjara region earlier today.

Gakharia who left the post in February 2021 and launched the new party in May of the year stated during the presentation that the achievements made by the country over the past several years ‘need to be protected from the irresponsible policy’ of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD).

“GD is becoming more and more alike to the United National Movement,” Gakharia said.

For Georgia’s mayoral candidates in Adjara are as follows: Batumi – Irakli Mikeladze, Shuakhevi – Shalva Gogitidze, Khelvachauri – Jumper Beridze, Keda – Elguja Nakashidze, Kobuleti – Irakli Beridze, Khulo – Gia Abuladze.

The presentation took place only with a few attendees in solidarity with Georgian doctors amid the severe epidemiological situation in the country.

The event was protested by the activists of the movement Shame and a political party Droa, who have been demanding Gakharia’s punishment for a rally dispersal in central Tbilisi in June 2019 when Gakharia served as country’s interior minister under GD.

After the protests Gakharia was promoted to the country’s PM and took the post until controversies with the GD leadership in February 2021 over the release of the UNM head Nika Melia from prison.
