Seven medical professionals, invited by the Public Defender’s office, last week monitored the health of the currently imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili in a Vivamedi civilian clinic in Tbilisi, and claimed his sleep had improved and the former official “no longer” suffered from nightmares.

However, the group noted Saakashvili suffered from muscle atrophy, neuropathy and cognitive deterioration, was in need of a “close medical supervision”, while also noting he “mostly lies down, feels weak and reluctantly answers the questions”.

Saakashvili, the third President of Georgia, was arrested in Tbilisi in October 2021 and is currently serving his six-year term for abuse of power while in office.

The former official has been receiving treatment in the civilian clinic since May 2022. He currently holds Ukrainian citizenship and chaired the executive committee of the Ukrainian National Reforms Council prior to his arrest after eight years in self-imposed political exile.
