Georgia’s imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili has tested positive for coronavirus, lawyer Shalva Khachapuridze said on Tuesday.

He said in his social media post the former official had “once again lost consciousness”.

Saakashvili, who currently holds Ukrainian citizenship, was arrested in Tbilisi in October 2021, on his clandestine return.

A trial hearing on granting his release on medical grounds has been scheduled on Friday.
