Ex-UNM chair urges opposition male MPs react to insults against female lawmakers

Nika Melia, a former chair of the United National Movement opposition party, on Tuesday urged male opposition MPs to react to “degrading and sexist” statements by the ruling party MPs against their female, opposition colleagues in the lawmaking body. 

 

The calls came following Aluda Ghudushauri and Irakli Beraia, the ruling party MPs, insulted opposition female MPs Ana Tsitlidze and Teona Akubardia earlier on Tuesday. 

 

“When the opposition female MPs are subjected to indescribable insults, on live broadcast, what is your power, what is your mission or what is your obligation to stop there, calmly and quietly, how or for what purpose do you sit? […]” Melia said. 

 

He also claimed the fulfillment of 12-pont conditions outlined by the European Commission last year for granting Georgia its membership candidate status had been “removed” from the agenda, and the MP’s mandate could not be used to visit ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili in a Tbilisi civilian clinic
