Georgaian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday announced at a government meeting that his office was considering a draft decree to write off fines imposed on up to 2,000 citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Kobakhidze, 1855 individuals and 38 legal entities will be exempted from fines.

“Today, the government is considering a draft decree that will write off the fines imposed on up to 2,000 of our citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic. For several years, our citizens have been burdened with these fines. Therefore, the government will make a decision on canceling these fines at today’s meeting. The Ministry of Health has prepared a proposal for this. A total of 1855 individuals and 38 legal entities will be exempted from fines, amounting to 5.6 million GEL,” said Kobakhidze.

The move comes ahead of the October general elections in the country.
