Madeleine Albright, the first female US secretary of state, passed away of cancer on March 23, aged 84.

Before becoming a central figure in Bill Clinton’s presidential administration, Albright served as a US ambassador to the United Nations.

Prior to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Albright wrote an op-ed for the New York Times, arguing Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin would make a ‘historic error’ by invading Ukraine.

“Instead of paving Russia’s path to greatness, invading Ukraine would ensure Mr. Putin’s infamy by leaving his country diplomatically isolated, economically crippled and strategically vulnerable in the face of a stronger, more united Western alliance,” she wrote.

In 2012, Albright was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama.
