The For Georgia opposition party, founded by former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, on Thursday accused the ruling Georgian Dream party and the United National Movement opposition – the largest opposition group in the legislative body – of holding “confidential talks” over the impeachment of President Salome Zourabichvili.
Mikheil Daushvili from the party claimed the UNM had plans to vote for Zourabichvili’s impeachment, initiated by the ruling party last month for alleged violation of the country’s constitution through visiting Europe without the Government’s consent, despite its pledge to boycott the process if the constitutional court confirms the violation.
Daushvili also said both parties were trying to “drag” For Georgia in the “fraud” and “shift a blame” onto it by saying the party voted for Zourabichvili’s impeachment.
“The challenge is accepted and wait for the answer!” Daushvili said, adding the party had “no plans” to back the President’s impeachment, who says her foreign trips aimed at facilitating the country’s obtaining the European Union’s membership candidate status later this year.
The For Georgia says it had become a “target of attack” from the ruling party and the UNM opposition due to its growing rating since its creation in 2021, shortly after Gakharia quit premiership and the ruling party following controversies with the GD top figures.
The constitutional court is now considering Zourabichvili’s impeachment and will present its conclusion this month.
The ruling party will need at least 100 votes in the 150-member Parliament to dismiss Zourabichvili if the court approves the allegations, while it has about 80 seats.
