Georgia’s opposition party, For Georgia, has called on the ruling Georgian Dream party to bring Prosecutor General Irakli Shotadze to the legislative body for discussions regarding alleged elite corruption.

Natia Mezvrishvili, a former law enforcement official now representing the opposition party, expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of results from several statements submitted to the prosecutor’s office over months, focusing on political corruption.

Mezvrishvili asserted that individuals linked to the ruling party and 25 influential families associated with them “persistently” engage in diverting public funds for personal gain. According to her, this diversion contributed to worsening living conditions, increased poverty among the public, and the continuous accumulation of wealth by the elites. The lawmaker criticized the parliament for “neglecting its duty” to oversee the prosecutor’s office, emphasizing the absence of a review of the prosecutor’s office report for years. Mezvrishvili claimed that the parliament’s “lack of interest” in evaluating how the prosecutor’s office combats corruption reflects a “nonchalant attitude” towards addressing critical issues.

Mezvrishvili also raised concerns about the formal nature of Prosecutor’s Council meetings and the “fictitious representation” of Parliament in the Council. She pointed out that critical voices addressing challenges faced by the prosecutor’s office were absent, and parliamentarians either refrained from attending council sessions or avoided asking questions.

Mezvrishvili highlighted the parliament’s “indifferent approach”, citing an instance where an opposition representative was elected with the ruling party’s support.

Highlighting the primary role of the prosecutor’s office in protecting citizens from crime, Mezvrishvili criticized the current Prosecutor General’s four years of “apparent inactivity” in addressing systemic elite corruption. She stressed the people’s right, through their elected parliament, to question the Prosecutor General and understand the reasons behind the office’s perceived lack of action against corruption within the elite.
