Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe dies after being shot

The former Japanese PM  Shinzo Abe, 67, died on Friday, shortly after being shot while making a speech in the western city of Nara.

 

He was flown to hospital by helicopter after the attack in critical condition.

 

It was the first assassination of a sitting or former Japanese premier since 1930s.

 

Footage by Japanese media showed Abe’s speech interrupted by two loud bangs.

 

Emergency services said he had been wounded on the right side of his neck and left clavicle.

 

The suspect reportedly did not attempt to flee before being detained at the scene.

 

Police identified the suspect as Tetsuya Yamagami, a 41-year-old resident of Nara.
