Former ruling party MPs accuse US Embassy of “attacking the Govt”, interfering in judiciary

The former MPs of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Sozar Subari, Dimitri Khundadze, Mikheil Kavelashvili and Guram Macharashvili, on Tuesday accused the US Embassy, ​​of interfering in court issues and an attack on the Government. 

The ruling party has not distanced itself from the statements of its former MPs, who left the party last month in an attempt “to tell the public the truth”. 

The MPs claimed that a document on judicial reform, presented by the Embassy to the Georgian Parliament shortly before, aimed to  “weaken” Georgian state institutions and strengthen the “radical opposition”.

“The Embassy had also selected about ten favourite judges who enjoy special privileges when planning visits, training and seminars. In general, when organizing the mentioned events, which is carried out bypassing the Supreme Council of Justice of Geogia, a discriminatory approach can be seen, behind which is the interest of maintaining and expanding the circle of favorite judges”, said the former MPs of the GD. 

In the same statement, the MPs indicated that the US Embassy “is constantly attacking the Georgian authorities”. 

“After the publication of our previous statement, a new line of the Embassy’s attack on the Government was revealed, which was first voiced by the lobbyists of the Embassy and the UNM party, Toomas Ilves”, said the MPs. 

The four claimed that the US recommendations towards the Georgian judiciary “were actually instructions”. 

In their previous statements, the former MPs of the GD accused the US of “dragging Georgia into Russia’s war in Ukraine” and “exerting pressure of a judge”.
