Sheraz Gasri, the French Ambassador to Georgia, on Tuesday criticized the Georgian Dream Government for allegedly targeting media professionals amidst ongoing protests in the country against its decision to delay EU integration until 2028.

“Freedom of the press is the backbone of democracy in Georgia and everywhere. Media professionals should be protected, not targeted,” the diplomat stated in a social media post.

The controversy was further fueled by a Batumi City Court ruling on Tuesday, which sentenced media founder Mzia Amaglobeli to preventive detention on charges of assaulting a police officer.
