The Georgian Dream (GD) ruling party claims that the United National Movement (UNM) opposition has plans ‘to release more files on personal data of public figures’ in the coming days from abroad.
GD faction head in parliament Mamuka Mdinaradze stated earlier today that a source from the UNM provided the information, adding that the release of the personal data aims to spark destabilization in the country ahead of the October 2 municipal elections.
Mdinaradze said, however, that if the UNM ‘really dares to do so, they will become the target of public anger.’
Yesterday the GD accused the UNM of the release of the files which were allegedly leaked from the country’s State Security Service and included compromising materials on clerics.
The opposition parties say that state agencies under GD are engaged with illegal surveillance to use the information to blackmail and suppress individuals.
The Georgian Chief Prosecutor’s Office is now investigating the case of yesterday’s files.
