Head of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party Irakli Kobakhidze said today that the goal of the return of currently imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili was to spark tension in the country, take office along with former PM Giorgi Gakharia and the Lelo party founder Mamuka  Khazaradze and then drag Georgia into the Russia-Ukraine war.

He claimed that Saakashvili “was unable” to allow Russia to take control of the whole Georgia back in 2008, and “if the current authorities failed to respond to the threats properly and arrest Saakashvili, there would be Russian tanks in Tbilisi now.”

Kobakhidze also said that Public Defender Nino Lomjaria and anyone else who was demanding Saakashvili’s transfer abroad for treatment “are eager” to see Georgia dragged into the war.

“The Public Defender is a representative of the political force called the War Party,” Kobakhidze said, referring to the United National Movement opposition party.

Saakashvili, who holds Ukrainian citizenship, was arrested in Tbilisi on October 1, 2021, ahead of Georgia’s municipal elections.

He claimed he returned after eight years in political exile to help the opposition change the “pro-Russian” Georgian Dream government via elections.

Georgian PM Irakli Garibashvili, however, said yesterday that Saakashvili’s plan was to drag Georgia into the war as at that time there were reports that Russia could invade Ukraine.
