Ruling party MP Maia Bitadze stated that Georgia’s strategic partnership with the United States has yielded “nothing in reality,” arguing that the relationship remains only a declaration on paper.
Speaking on Georgian Public Broadcaster, Bitadze questioned the tangible benefits of the partnership, saying it has not delivered meaningful results for the country.
“When we talk about Georgia–US relations and the idea of ending strategic partnership, we should clearly recall what this partnership has actually brought Georgia. In reality, it brought nothing beyond a statement written on paper,” Bitadze said.
She went on to claim that efforts by the Georgian Dream government to secure a free trade agreement and visa-free travel with the US were consistently ignored by Washington.
“Despite our government’s repeated calls to strengthen negotiations on free trade, restoring certain preferences, and visa liberalization, we saw no response,” she added.
Her remarks come amid the passage of MEGOBARI Act by the US House of Representatives on Tuesday. It represents a bipartisan bill imposing sanctions on Georgian officials accused of undermining democracy and aligning with authoritarian regimes.
The bill has already been registered in Senate and if passed, it will be sent to the US President for the final approval.
