Georgian police have arrested 43 individuals in connection with drug-related offences in a large-scale operation carried out over the past 24 hours across Tbilisi and several regions, Interior Minister Geka Geladze announced on Thursday.
Speaking to the media, Geladze said the suspects are facing charges related to the sale, attempted sale, and preparation for the sale of narcotics, as well as the import, purchase, and possession of drugs in large and especially large quantities. Among those arrested are both Georgian nationals and foreign citizens.
“This was part of an intensive police operation targeting the illegal circulation of narcotic substances,” Geladze stated. “The arrests were made during coordinated actions nationwide, and a significant amount of drugs were seized as evidence from suspects’ homes, vehicles, and personal belongings.”
He noted that the charges could carry penalties of up to 20 years in prison or life imprisonment, under Georgian law.
The investigation revealed that the accused used a variety of methods to distribute drugs, including encrypted messaging apps, social media platforms, and direct hand-to-hand transactions.
Police also conducted controlled purchases of drugs from several of the suspects, with court approval, using covert audio and video recordings to gather evidence.
Geladze praised the ongoing efforts of police and anti-narcotics units:
“Our officers continue to work around the clock, nationwide, to combat drug trafficking. I thank every one of them for their dedication and professionalism.”
