Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with a high-level event in Tbilisi, reaffirming the government’s commitment to an “uncompromising fight” against drug-related offences.
Minister Geka Geladze on Thursday addressed senior officials from various law enforcement bodies, including Prosecutor General Giorgi Gvarakidze and Mikheil Maghlakelidze, head of the Investigation Service of the Ministry of Finance. In his remarks, Geladze emphasised the government’s firm stance on combating drug crime, describing it as a national security and public health priority.
“The distribution and use of narcotic drugs pose a threat to state security, public health, and the well-being of every citizen,” said Geladze. “The fight against drug crime is one of the most important priorities of our government.”
He cited recent legislative changes passed by Parliament as evidence of the government’s strengthened approach, including harsher penalties for drug trafficking and new restrictions on the private sector’s role in substitution therapy and the importation of psychotropic substances. The measures, introduced by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, aim to tighten control over the prescription and availability of such medications, he said.
“These initiatives will significantly contribute to the fight against drug addiction,” the minister said, praising the continued efforts of Ministry of Internal Affairs personnel.
David Kiknadze, Director of the Central Criminal Police Department, presented statistical data on drug crimes recorded in the current year. He highlighted recent special operations conducted by police forces and pledged ongoing active enforcement efforts to curb the illegal drug trade.
Officials reiterated that the Ministry, in coordination with other agencies, would continue to implement strict legal measures against those involved in drug-related activities.
