In a major nationwide operation conducted late last night, Georgian police arrested 34 individuals on drug-related charges, Interior Minister Gela Geladze announced at a press briefing on Wednesday.
The arrests, which took place at dozens of locations across the country, targeted both Georgian and foreign nationals. According to Minister Geladze, the majority of those detained were involved in the illegal distribution of various narcotics, while others were charged with possession of large or particularly large quantities of drugs.
"Several of the suspects are believed to be major drug dealers," said Geladze. "They were part of drug distribution networks and used various methods to sell narcotics—specifically, hiding substances at designated locations and coordinating sales through mobile apps and social media."
The investigation revealed that the drugs were intended for distribution across Georgia, including in nightclubs and entertainment venues. Police conducted controlled purchases under court orders and captured audio and video evidence of the transactions.
During searches of the suspects' homes and personal belongings, police seized significant quantities of heroin, cocaine, suboxone, methadone, alpha-PVP, and other substances. Authorities also confiscated materials used for packaging drugs, large sums of suspected drug proceeds, and unregistered firearms and ammunition.
If convicted, those arrested face sentences of up to 20 years or even life imprisonment.
The Minister expressed gratitude to the police forces involved in the operation, stating, “I want to sincerely thank all the officers who work tirelessly to rid our country of drug trafficking. Their efforts save countless citizens from the devastating consequences of addiction.”
