Today Georgia commemorates the memory of the victims of the tragic events of April 9, 1989.
On that day, Soviet military forces violently suppressed a peaceful demonstration on Rustaveli Avenue, near the present-day parliament building in Tbilisi, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 20 lives among the demonstrators.
Hundreds more were wounded or exposed to poisonous gas during the crackdown.
